WHAT: New event at Sidewalk
Café - German Strudel or Kuchen Baking Contest at the
German-American Festival!
WHEN: Saturday, August 29, 2009
TIME: 3:30 pm
Submit (baked) entry to the Sidewalk Café (along with the recipe) on the day of
the event!
Ladies, Gentlemen, Friends and Neighbors...let’s get practicing for this new
event of 2009.
We are looking for the best German Baker!!! Need a recipe?
German Fruit Kuchen
1 stick margarine 3/4 C sugar
3 eggs t tsp vanilla
Cream Together
1-3/4 cup all purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
Sift Together - Add dry mixture to creamed mixture
Top with fruit (sliced apples, peaches, etc.) or Fruit Pie Filling
Crumb Topping:
3/4 cup sugar
1-1/2 cup flour
1 stick butter or margarine
Mix together by hand and sprinkle on top of fruit.
Use one 9x13 baking pan - Bake at 350 degree oven for 50 minutes or until nice
and brown and completely baked.
STRUDEL DOUGH -
3 cups flour and 1/2 lb of margarine
Mix like for pie crust
1/4 cup water
3 egg yolks (or 2 whole eggs)
2 Tbs. vinegar
Mix together and add to first mixture.
Knead quickly to smooth dough, cover and chill 3 hrs. or overnight
Roll out and fill with graham cracker crumbs, apples w. 1/2 cup sugar, lemon
rind and raisins, 1 cup chopped nuts or cinnamon (optional).
Seal edges with water and bake at 350 degree over for 45 min., after cooking,
sift powdered sugar over strudel.
